Mandate
Created in 1994, pursuant to the Department of Citizenship and Immigration Act, Citizenship and Immigration (CIC) brings together the government's citizenship and immigration programs in order to promote the specific ideals shared by all Canadians and help build a stronger Canada. CIC's mandate is based on the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), enacted in 2002 as a result of major legislative reform, and on the Citizenship Act of 1977. Pursuant to the Constitution Act of 1867, immigration is an area of shared jurisdiction with the provinces and territories. With the creation of the Canada Border Services Agency on December 12, 2003, responsibility for the enforcement of the IRPA was transferred to the Minister of Public Safety Canada.

Mandate
The Department of Justice has a dual mandate in support of the dual roles of the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of Canada.
In support of the Minister of Justice, the Department supports the Minister in his responsibilities for 45 statutes and areas of federal law including human rights law, family and youth law, administrative law, Aboriginal justice, general public law and private international law.
The Department also supports the Minister's capacity to introduce policies and programs that not only change the law but are intended to influence the way the law is applied, how the legal system functions and how individuals interact with the system. The Department enacts reform and provides advice on all reforms related to criminal law.
The Department of Justice also supports the Minister of Justice as the legal advisor to Cabinet.
In support of the Attorney General, the Department is responsible for advising federal departments and agencies on behalf of the Crown including the provision of policy and program advice and direction through the development of the legal content of bills, regulations and guidelines, and representing the Crown whenever legal actions are taken against a federal body.
Note that since December 12, 2006, the Attorney General is also supported by the Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC). The PPSC was created as an entity independent of the Department of Justice, taking over the duties of the former Federal Prosecution Service (FPS) relating to the prosecution of violations of federal law in all the provinces, as well as the prosecution of all federal offences, including Criminal Code violations, in the territories.
