New Family Member

When you have a new family member, either through the birth or adoption of a child or if you marry or enter into a conjugal relationship, your employer has a number of policies and programs to recognize your needs at this time.

There are several benefits available to employees in the federal Public Service regarding pregnancy, childbirth, post-childbirth recuperation, adoption, and child care. The Maternity Benefits Policy  describes each of the several benefits that are available, the conditions that apply to their use, and the ways in which they can be combined.

When returning to work after the birth of a child you may wish to consider requesting one of the available flexible working arrangements.

It is important that you review your various benefit programs to find out if you can extend coverage to your new family member and what steps, if any, you must take to do so.  Sometimes there are time limits for enrolling new dependants.  You should also investigate benefits for family members under your insurance benefits programs and under your Public Service Pension Plan.  You may also wish to change your designated beneficiary.
