Greater access to high-quality care for Veterans

We’re making it easier for Veterans and their families to access supportive services from Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC). In the midst of higher demand for these services, we're using feedback from Veterans to redesign and simplify the application process. We’re listening to Veterans and their families to make sure that support is there when needed.

A higher standard of care for Veterans

The Government of Canada aims to provide a higher standard of care that improves case management services and the lives of Veterans and their families. VAC is renewing case management by overhauling how the Department delivers services to clients, including introducing a Guided Support Model that provides additional services and ensures case managers have more time to dedicate to Veterans with the most complex needs.

Service in more places

As a step toward meeting service demand, nine VAC offices were reopened and staffed across Canada between July 2016 and May 2017 and a new office was opened in Surrey, British Columbia to ensure timely access to in-depth, one-on-one service delivery.

Partnered for service improvement

VAC and the Department of National Defence are working together to review their programs, simplify benefits and make processes more streamlined and client centered. In December, 2018, the two Departments announced the creation of the Transition Group—a key aspect of improving the transition experience for Canadian Armed Forces members and their families. The Transition Group will ensure that members begin to think about transition earlier in their careers with leadership guidance and mandatory training that will make them feel equipped, confident and secure to plan and prepare for life after service.

More for Veterans online

We’re continuing to improve My VAC Account, VAC’s online service channel for Veterans – to provide new features and enhance existing ones. Veterans can apply for benefits, track their applications, receive correspondence, send us messages, and much more…when it’s convenient for them. Through guided forms available in My VAC Account, applying for benefits is easier and simpler for Veterans. With pension for life in April 2019, we are continuing to advance the ‘tell us once’ approach and provide more detailed and real-time information to Veterans on the status of their applications.
