Greening Government Operations (GGO)

Green Procurement Reporting For Departments and Agencies Not Bound by the Federal Sustainable Development Act

Strategies / Comments

I. Approach

In keeping with the nature and scope of its procurement activities, SSHRC is continuing its ongoing investigation and incorporation of green procurement opportunities as part of its business practices. The vice-president, Common Administrative Services Directorate, is responsible for SSHRC’s application of the Policy on Green Procurement. In 2012-13, as part of its organizational business transformation initiatives, SSHRC will explore new green solution opportunities, and will build on its existing good green practices.

II. Management processes and controls
  1. SSHRC uses Public Works and Government Services Canada procurement instruments as its primary procurement mechanism.
  2. In 2012-13, all SSHRC contracting documents will be reviewed to ensure that new contracts include a clause addressing environmental considerations in the performance of the work required.
III. Setting targets

SSHRC has set the following targets for 2012-13:

  1. Maintain reduction in paper usage by continuing to set double-sided printing as the default option for SSHRC printers, and continuing the transition to online application submission options in place of hard-copy submission requirements.
  2. By March 2013, be able to identify 65 per cent of office supplies as having environmental features.
  3. In 2012-13, assess additional possible reduction targets for specific office supply goods.
IV. Training
  1. The organization will ensure that all existing procurement and materiel management functional staff take the Canada School of Public Service Course 215 on green procurement as part of the current on-boarding program to be integrated into SSHRC’s training curriculum.
  2. SSHRC will raise internal awareness regarding green procurement with key stakeholders.
  3. Management will increase staff awareness of environmental practices, such as limiting the number of printed copies of documents and using two-sided printing and copying.

Performance evaluation
The performance management agreement of the manager, Procurement, Contracts and Materiel Management, includes the objective of ensuring that environmental considerations are taken into account in all procurement activities.

Meeting targets
SSHRC will review its green procurement strategies at mid-year to ensure they are on track to be achieved by the end of the fiscal year.
