Isolated Posts and Government Housing

Provisions of the Isolated Posts and Government Housing Directive (IPGHD) are co-developed by participating bargaining agents and public service employers that are members of the National Joint Council. They are applicable to public service employees working in isolated locations across Canada and to their related government housing.

The Isolated Posts and Government Housing Directive is designed to facilitate the recruitment and retention of staff delivering government programs in isolated locations across Canada. Its provisions are designed to assist in offsetting some of the higher costs, and to recognize the inherent disadvantages associated with living and working in isolated posts. It also ensures equal treatment for employees owning or renting similar accommodations from private or commercial sources. These provisions do not constitute income or other compensation that would open the way for personal gain.

Under the Directive, the authorized use of privately owned vehicles (other than on government business travel) may also be subject to Lower Kilometric Rates.
