The Chief Information Officer Branch (CIOB) manages the policy development
and implementation process for the Government of Canada in the area of security
and identity management. This includes:
- Providing strategic direction and oversight for the development and
implementation of the Policy on Government Security and associated
directives, standards and guidelines;
- Leading government-wide transformation initiatives in the security and
identity management domains in support of whole-of-government strategic and
operational priorities;
- Conducting government-wide consultations with senior management of lead
security agencies, departments and other agencies through governance
committees, working groups and bilateral discussions;
- Engaging security communities (Chief Information Officers, Departmental
Security Officers, Information Technology Security Coordinators and security
practitioners) in the process of developing and implementing security policy
instruments and of strategic transformation initiatives by means of
interdepartmental meetings, workshops, training and awareness sessions;
- Monitoring and oversight to ensure compliance with the policy;
- Overseeing the review and assessment of all investment plans and
submissions made by departments and agencies to TBS for the approval of
government systems in light of security and identity management
considerations;
- Providing accreditation authority for common and shared systems;
- Conducting annual assessments under the Management Accountability
Framework for the Security and Business Continuity Area of Management to
identify security management weaknesses in individual departments and
agencies, and ultimately on a government-wide basis.
