Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) contributes to a stronger Canada directly through the Government of Canada's outcomes of Innovative and Knowledge-Based Economy and Strong Economic Growth. The outcomes include initiatives associated with Canada's Economic Action Plan and an Innovative and Knowledge-Based Economy.

WD Mandate and WD Vision

  1. WD's mandate is to promote the development and diversification of the western Canadian economy, coordinate federal economic activities in the West and reflect western Canadian interests in national decision-making.
  2. WD's vision is to be leaders in creating a more diversified western Canadian economy that has strong, competitive and innovative businesses and communities.

Third level of WD's 2010-11 Strategic Planning Framework

For 2010-2011, WD has identified three operational priorities to support the achievement of its strategic outcome. They are:

  1. Technology Commercialization
  2. Trade & Investment
  3. Business Productivity & Competitiveness

Fourth level of WD's 2010-11 Strategic Planning Framework

The three operational priorities listed above will be WD's focus in 2010-11 to achieve the strategic outcome of: The western Canadian economy is developed and diversified.

Fifth level of WD's 2010-11 Strategic Planning Framework

WD's Five Program Activities contribute to the achievement of the department's strategic outcome. These program activities are:

  1. Business Development: Strong SMEs in western Canada with improved capacity to remain competitive in the global market.
  2. Innovation: A stronger knowledge-based economy.
  3. Community Economic Development: Communities have increased economic opportunities and capacity to respond to challenges, as well as the necessary investments in public infrastructure.
  4. Policy, Advocacy and Coordination: Policies and Programs that strengthen the western Canadian economy.
  5. Internal Services: Effective and efficient support for the delivery of the organizational strategic outcome.
