2010-2011 Program Activity Architecture (PAA)

This is an image of Environment Canada's 2010-2011 Program Activity Architecture (PAA). The PAA is a structured inventory of a department's programs. These programs are arranged in a hierarchical manner to depict the logical relationship between each program and the department's Strategic Outcomes to which they contribute.

Environment Canada's 2010-2011 Program Activity Architecture (PAA) is composed of four Strategic Outcomes, each with distinct Program Activities including one for Internal Services, and some with distinct Sub-activities. The various levels of programs are arranged in five columns going from left to right of the image.

The first Strategic Outcome is entitled Canada's natural environment is conserved and restored for present and future generations. Within this Strategic Outcome, there are four Program Activities and eleven Sub-Activities. The first Program Activity is entitled Biodiversity - Wildlife and Habitat, and is composed of four Sub-activities: Biodiversity Policy and Priorities; Species at Risk; Migratory Birds; and Wildlife Habitat Conservation, which is marked by an asterisk. The explanatory text states that there are Sub-sub-activities under this program that have not been identified in this image. The second Program Activity is entitled Water Resources, and is composed of three Sub-activities: Water Quality and Aquatic Ecosystems Health; Water Resource Management and Use; and Hydrological Service and Water Survey. The third Program Activity is entitled Sustainable Ecosystems, and is composed of four Sub-activities: Sustainability Reporting and Indicators; Ecosystem Assessment and Approaches; Community Engagement; and Ecosystems Initiatives. The last two Sub-activities are marked by an asterisk. The explanatory text states that there are Sub-sub-activities under these programs that have not been identified in this image. The fourth Program Activity is entitled Compliance Promotion and Enforcement - Wildlife, and does not have any underlying Sub-activities.

The second Strategic Outcome is entitled Canadians are equipped to make informed decisions on changing weather, water and climate conditions. Within this Strategic Outcome, there are two Program Activities and seven Sub-Activities. The first Program Activity is entitled Weather and Environmental Services for Canadians, and is composed of three Sub-activities: Weather Observations, Forecasts and Warnings; Health-related Meteorological Information; and Climate Information, Predictions and Tools. The second Program Activity is entitled Weather and Environmental Services for Targeted Users, and is composed of four Sub-activities: Services to Aviation; Services to Marine Transportation; Services to the Department of National Defence; and Services to Economic Sectors.

The third Strategic Outcome is entitled Threats to Canadians and their environment from pollution are minimized. Within this Strategic Outcome, there are three Program Activities and seven Sub-Activities. The first Program Activity is entitled Substances and Waste Management, and is composed of four Sub-activities: Substances Management; Waste Management; Environmental Emergencies; and Contaminated Sites. An asterisk marks the second Sub-activity. The explanatory text states that there are Sub-sub-activities under this program that have not been identified in this image. The second Program Activity is entitled Climate Change and Clean Air, and is composed of three Sub-activities: Climate Change and Clean Air Regulatory Program; Climate Change and Clean Air Partnerships; and Environmental Technology. An asterisk marks all three Sub-activities. The explanatory text states that there are Sub-sub-activities under these programs that have not been identified in this image. The third Program Activity is entitled Compliance Promotion and Enforcement - Pollution, and does not have any underlying Sub-activities.

The fourth Strategic Outcome is entitled Canadians benefit from the responsible development of the Mackenzie gas resources. This Strategic Outcome is composed of a single Program Activity entitled Mackenzie Gas Project. There are no underlying Sub-activities or Sub-sub-activities.

The fifth and final column of the image presents the stand-alone Program Activity entitled Internal Services. This Program Activity is composed of three Sub-activities: Governance and Management Support; Resource management Services; and Asset management Services. An asterisk marks all three Sub-activities.
