Definitions
Applied title: the approved name used in the signature to identify an institution, program or activity. This title should be used in all communications.
Legal title: the name that appears in the enabling legislation (act), proclamation, order in council, or other instrument used to create a branch of government.
Signature: the combination of a symbol and the bilingual applied title. Also referred to as the corporate signature.
Financial Administration Act (FAA): An Act to provide for the financial administration of the Government of Canada, the establishment and maintenance of the accounts of Canada and the control of Crown corporations.

The first column on the left indicates which of the FAA schedules the institution falls under. The next columns indicate the institution's legal title as it appears in the FAA in English and French, followed by the institution's applied title as registered in both languages under the Federal Identity Program. The last columns to the right show the abbreviations of the institution's applied title in each language.
