Accelerated Economist Training Program


The Accelerated Economist Training Program (AETP), delivered by the Office of the Chief Human Resources Officer (OCHRO), is being phased out. A new AETP program, organized and led by a number of departments and agencies, has been implemented. For more information, please visit the AETP website.

The Accelerated Economist Training Program (AETP) offers the opportunity for up to 14 high-calibre post-graduates to work with top decision makers in the Public Service on a number of social, economic and international policy agendas.

It’s a challenging two-year program of tremendously diverse work experience divided into four six-month assignments in policy analysis and related areas.You will benefit from mentoring, hands-on training and teamwork that can lead to a rewarding career with the Government of Canada.

Who is eligible?

Candidates for AETP must have, or be about to receive, a Master's degree in any discipline. They must also have:

  • at least one half-year course in each of micro- and macro-economics (or an equivalent full-year course with both micro- and macro-economics)
  • a half-year course in economics
  • a fourth half-year course in economics or a half-year course in statistics, quantitative analysis or research methods.

Candidates are required, in addition to their degree, to have a solid grade point average and to have the competencies outlined in the Statement of Merit Criteria. They must also obtain a security clearance at the secret level.

How do I apply?

Go to Post Secondary Recruitment at the Public Service Commission. You will also find information on the Program at university career placement centres, and in Public Service Commission offices across Canada, and at career fairs on various Canadian university campuses.

Where will the program take me?

When you are about to graduate from the program, you will have the opportunity to prepare your résumé and have it circulated to departments and agencies with vacancies in their policy sectors. An accompanying letter will explain that you qualify for positions at the intermediate level.
