All Canadian provinces and territories have privacy legislation governing the collection, use and disclosure of personal information held by government agencies.
Each of these jurisdictions with personal data protection legislation provides Canadians with a general right to access and correct their personal information. As a general rule, you will not need to be aware of the specific provisions of these Acts as you complete your PIA, but for any initiative that involves other jurisdictions, you should consult your legal services to determine whether legal service needs to provide you with any advice about possibly conflicting laws.
Alberta's Health Information Act makes it mandatory that PIAs are completed.
