Introduction to the PIA Assistant

"Privacy Impact Assessment" (PIA) refers to a comprehensive process designed by the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) to assist Government of Canada (GoC) institutions in determining the effects of program and service delivery initiatives on individual privacy.
PIAs help to assess privacy-related issues in the collection, use and disclosure of personal information.
PIAs also help institutions ensure that the appropriate steps are taken to mitigate any privacy-related risks.
The table below depicts the general process for completing a PIA.

Define scope of PIA process	Describe proposed business process diagrams	Complete privacy analysis questionnaires	Summarize privacy risks and evaluate degree of risk involved
Designate team resources	Identify clusters of personal information in business processes	Discuss answers to questionnaires that necessitate further details	Identify, discuss actions or options to mitigate risks
Adapt PIA tools to reflect scope	Develop detailed data flow charts	Decribe privacy issues and implications	End with other considerations (if any) and path forward
