The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat invites applications from suitably qualified individuals for appointment as audit committee members to select Government of Canada departments and agencies. Audit committees with a majority of members from outside the federal public administration are required by legislation as a result of the passing of the Federal Accountability Act.
The role of the audit committee is to provide objective advice and recommendations to the deputy head regarding the sufficiency, quality and results of assurance on the adequacy and functioning of the department's risk management, control and governance frameworks and processes (including accountability and auditing systems). provide advice and recommendations as may be requested by the deputy head on specific emerging priorities, concerns, risks, opportunities and/or accountability reporting.
Appointees will be expected to provide challenging and informed input to the audit committee and to support the Deputy Head in his or her role as accounting officer.
As a whole, the audit committee will possess high-level business management skills, senior-level experience in the governance of complex organizations, financial expertise and specialized skills and experience to align with the department or agency's specific mandate.
Candidates must come with a high-level pedigree of competency and experience in a combination of the following fields: corporate governance, change leadership, strategic information management, risk management, service delivery, law, economics, finance, accounting, or auditing. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate significant contributions in their fields of practice, in specific industries, or in large public service or not-for-profit organizations.
As a guideline, depending on the complexity of the department or agency's mandate, a time commitment of up to 20 days per year is expected. Appointments to act as chair could require an additional time commitment of up to 10 days. These positions are remunerated on a per diem basis.
