The main activities of the Chief Information Officer Branch (CIOB) consist in:
- Providing leadership in implementing the GC Information Management Strategy;
- Supporting the new policy on the Management of Projects providing tools to departments and agencies and providing improved oversight on the conduct of some of the most significant of these projects;
- Providing leadership in the adoption of government-wide approaches to Cyber Defence and Individual Security Screening;
- Developing GC-wide standards, guidelines & other tools enabling improved alignment of enterprise architecture;
- Providing leadership in the application of Social Networking/Web 2.0/Wiki technologies in GC operations;
- Building capacity and strengthening the skills of the GC Information Access and Privacy Communities; and
- Working collaboratively in developing tools, products and services to strengthen the GC IM and IT communities of practice.
As part of its mandate, CIOB is responsible for developing policy, monitoring management, and leading community development and capacity building initiatives in the following policy areas:
- Information Management;
- Information Technology;
- Security and Identity Management; and
- Information and Privacy.
In order to ensure the sound management and stewardship of the Government of Canada's information and technology assets and its communities of practice, CIOB develops and maintains guidance and oversight in the following areas:
